What to Do If You Have “Mother Guilt”

Dropping your child off for day care in Queens Park or any Perth suburb can be an emotional experience. There are a lot of things to be concerned about. Did you choose the right day care centre? Will they take care of your child the way you want them to? Will your child suffer from separation anxiety?

This ultimately leads to feelings of guilt. This “mother guilt” is so prevalent that in a 2013 survey, a large number of respondents cited “mother guilt” as the single most difficult issue when returning to work.

The survey further indicated that many women feel like they are putting their professional or financial needs ahead of their child or family. They also wonder if it would be better if their child was at home.

What to Do If You Have “Mother Guilt” - Day Care Tips

These feelings are normal and are because of the sense of responsibility you feel as a parent and the deep emotional attachment any good mother feels toward her child. Here are some ways to cope with those feelings.

Find a Great Day Care Centre

The number one thing you can do is to find a great day care centre for your child. The single best thing you can do is to make sure your child is in a place where you know he or she will be taken care of with the quality of care you would give. Visit the day care centre and talk to the carers. If you are comfortable with them and your child is comfortable with them, it will help you feel better about leaving your child there.

The other most important thing to do is to treat this as a positive and as a “treat” for your child. Try to help your child look forward to going. If your child feels that you are apprehensive, your child will be apprehensive.
